He explained:

Whenever a customer walked in, they’d ask to see a pair of shoes. He’d bring them that pair.

Then, they’d say, “Can I see that one as well?” He’d bring a second pair.

Inevitably, the next request would be, “Can I see that one too?”

That’s when he’d ask, “Which one would you like me to take away?”

He discovered that when customers had a choice of three, they often bought none. But with just two options, they almost always made a decision.
